INFORMATION INTEGRITY

It's been a long time since there was a breakthrough at the COP, but this certainly qualifies. Ten major countries have signed a declaration that requires regulating climate disinformation, misinformation and denialism within public and corporate communications.

SOLAR SAVES

Despite Hurricane Melissa’s ripping winds across Jamaica, solar panels in Treasure Beach were undamaged and created a sanctuary for neighbors following the storm. Thanks to the battery storage, residents could access safe food and water as well as the Internet to contact loved ones.

AMAZON ACCOUNTABILITY

JP Morgan Chase is finally acknowledging that the Amazon rainforest is worth protecting, and says it will provide better oversight of clients and restrictions. This is a clear sign that pressure from Indigenous communities and climate groups is working.

OUT OF AFRICA

Fossil fuel villains just got kicked out of South Africa, with the Western Cape High Court slashing two massive drilling projects off the coast, effectively protecting 10,000 square kilometers of open ocean from oil spills and habitat destruction.

SOLAR FOR YA, MATE

The world’s sunniest continent is sharing their light! Australia’s new “Solar Sharer” program shares excess energy from peak sunlight hours to give everyone three hours of free electricity a day.

TROPICAL FOREST FINANCE

Brazil just introduced a potential breakthrough at COP30. They’ve designed a way to pay countries and forest protectors to keep tropical forests standing. The Tropical Forest Forever Facility has already received 5.5 billion in pledges.

CONCRETE TO CROPS

Can we feed the U.S. without monocropping? Metropolitan gardens and farms are already helping improve food security, and they’re transforming unused rooftops and vacant lots into community gardens to do it.

IN SOLIDARITY

Indigenous groups were both shocked and angry after being left out of COP30 negotiations in Brazil. The exclusion resulted in large-scale protests both inside and outside of the conference.

ROAD MAP

More than 80 countries from nearly every continent are calling for a roadmap to phase out fossil fuels. The demand comes after Brazil & COP30 decided to exclude any mention of the “transition away from fossil fuels” from the official agenda.

CITY OF REFUGE

New York has always been a home for immigrants around the world, but a new type of migration is starting to occur. Tens of thousands of climate refugees are arriving in the city from areas repeatedly devastated by climate disasters, so why isn’t “climate refugee” a legally recognized term yet?

FOUL PLAY AT EPA

A new report shows the Trump Administration is essentially destroying the EPA. Weakening enforcement against polluters, slashing regulation, and a general focus on helping big industry rather than the public has fundamentally changed the agency. Read the dirty details here.

BIG APPLE, BIG PIPELINE

New York State just approved a $1 billion project to build an underwater gas pipeline, even after three prior rejections due to environmental concerns. The pipeline will deliver gas from Pennsylvania to New York City, while completely undermining state climate goals.

CLIMATEGATE

An investigation has revealed Bill Gates donated over $3.5 million to a think tank run by climate denier Bjorn Lomborg since 2017. Lomborg continues to perpetuate the narrative that climate policy won’t work and that other global issues are more pressing.

FOREST FELONIES

Interpol is getting involved in the illegal deforestation fight. The international police organization has launched a new effort to stop criminals from making billions by looting the planet's forests. It’s an attempt to stop illegal logging, timber trafficking and gold mining. This is major.

CLIMATE CRISIS IN CARAL

Archaeologists in Peru have discovered friezes left behind by the oldest civilization in the Americas, depicting severe climate change and famine. The evidence illustrates how the ancient city of Caral adapted to survive a severe drought 4,200 years ago by relocating and innovating systems.

POPE LEO’S MESSAGE

Following in the footsteps of his predecessor, Pope Leo is taking a stance against climate change. In recent UN talks, the head of the Catholic Church called out global leaders for not taking stronger climate action.

RIVER OF GRASS — The Everglades was once considered a worthless swamp. But the groundbreaking book, The Everglades: River of Grass, changed that entirely in 1947. Now, a new film provides a reimagining of the classic book. (Fourth Act Film)

NEWSOM AT THE TABLE — Trump didn’t go to COP. But Gavin Newsom did. And he provided a scathing rebuke of his antagonist’s absence, vowing to collaborate on climate initiatives and stoking the fire of their fight. (ABC10)

ARCO — In this magical animation, Arco is a 10-year-old boy from a peaceful, distant future who accidentally travels back to the year 2075 and discovers a world in peril. Can he help save the planet, and then get home? (NEON)

FORGOTTEN COAST — When Superstorm Sandy ravaged NYC, one neighborhood in Queens was hit hardest. While the city constructs massive seawalls to fortify Manhattan, this working-class community has been neglected. (Floodlight)

Climate science can be overwhelming. Here’s your easy-to-share highlight reel.
1 WAY TO 1.5°C

A new assessment claims the world can still limit warming to 1.5°C. The window is tight, and it feels like a near impossible task, but the group Climate Analytics says it’s still possible.

MEAT NEW RECORDS

Pollution from the world’s top 5 meat and dairy producers rivals that of some major oil corporations. The combined total produces more emissions than the nation of Saudi Arabia.

ONE IN FOUR

A quarter of the world’s population lives within three miles of operational fossil fuel projects, which means the health of 2 billion people is at risk from oil and gas ventures.

OILY OUTCOMES

Ever heard of Amazonian “blackwater?” The result of a toxic oil byproduct that spilled in the Amazon region in 2013, new research shows the damage is far worse than anyone realized.

QUIET ON CLIMATE

“Don’t Say Climate” politics have infiltrated government agencies, but no matter how we talk about it, it’s happening. Can we make progress without using the words “climate change?”

HUMANITY LAST

The U.S. is responsible for a 5th of global carbon pollution. Now the president’s “America First” policies will worsen climate impacts, and potentially result in an extra 1.3 million climate-related deaths each year.
